The Sydenham Panthers Basketball Club was originally established in 1995, with the financial and administrative support of the Salvation Army church.
On January 27th 1995, Peter Harding and Andrew Clinch approached the Keilor Salvation Army with a vision to start a junior basketball club for the local community. As active members of the church, they received strong support from the then ministers, Cameron and Sue Wallace. With their backing, the club was officially founded under the name Sydenham Salvation Army Basketball Club.
The commitment and support of the Salvation Army were instrumental in laying the foundations of what has become a strong and vibrant club. Without their involvement, the Sydenham Panthers Basketball Club, as we are known today, would not be where we are.
Endeavour, Competitiveness, Inclusion, Respect
Sydenham Panthers is a club built on inclusion and affordability for players in the local community. The club strives to keep fees as low as possible so that this is not an impediment to families. The club focus is junior basketball, and as such, the club is not aligned with other sporting clubs where the identity may get diluted or lost. The club encourages the involvement of parents and guardians through coaching and team management or committee involvement.
Club Annual Events
We love bringing our club community together, and each year we host two big events that give players, families, and volunteers a chance to connect off the court.
Annual Presentation:
Presentation Day is our biggest event of the year, held in September towards the end of the winter basketball season, it’s the one time our club comes together in one place, usually at a large venue like a local community centre. The day is all about celebrating and recognising the achievements of our players, coaches, and volunteers.
Annual Family Picnic:
To finish the summer school holidays on a high, we run our annual Family Picnic Day around the last weekend before Term 1 starts. It’s a relaxed day at the park with activities and basketball games (including the always entertaining coaches vs coaches match), a sausage sizzle for the kids, and a club raffle. It's a fun way to catch up before the summer basketball season resumes.
